Catherine Beeny, Director of Marketing

Tell us a little more about your career?

I always loved to write and had a vision of becoming a screenwriter. I began as a coffee gopher on TV and movie sets at Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. After falling in love with online marketing, I took the leap over to the dark side and never looked back.  It has been a wild, fun, and rewarding ride.

What is something you are most proud of?

I am most proud of my children because they are a reflection of the lessons and the love I have  tried to instill in them.

Pick three words that describe yourself:

Passionate, perfectionist, and goofball

Creativity has always been the driving force in my career. It’s what makes me tick as a professional and why I am able to enjoy my work. I grow every day because of the women and men I work with, they push my designs and writing ability.

What is something you are most proud of and why?

Years ago, I started my own company and though the venture was ultimately unsuccessful it was the reason I found my passion and career path. Without that experience, I may have not found what I truly love doing.

Sundance Returning to Cuba with Film Forward Program

Sundance Returning to Cuba with Film Forward Program

The Sundance Institute is headed to the island of Cuba this week, inviting students, artists, and film lovers to attend screenings and Q&A sessions to acclaimed independent films. Discussions are open to the public as part of Sundance Film Forward starting on July 14-16.

Sundance will screen “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” with novelist/screenwriter Jesse Andrews and “Meru” with director Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi at venues across Havana. These events are part of the Institute’s ongoing programs in Cuba that started back in 1989. Late last year the Institute visited Cuba to present a suite of programs in screenwriting, producing, film music, and documentary editing, in a new partnership with the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema and La Escuela Internacional De Cine Y TV (EICTV).

Sundance Film Festival touring program is designed for students and artist 18-24 years of age to excite and cultivate new audiences for independent film and enhance awareness of shared stories across borders.

Earth Day- 7 Easy Ways To Go Green

Earth Day: 7 Easy Ways To Go Green

Today marks the 46th annual Earth Day celebration, a movement that has inspired environmental awareness and change around the planet. It also marks a landmark decision of more than 155 countries planning to sign a U.N. agreement on climate change. Taking action to help our planet doesn’t have to be a momentous leap, but a few things in our daily lives can help reduce our impact on the planet.

Here are 8 ways to go green!

  1. Track Your Online Energy Use

Everyone thinks about their carbon footprint in terms of driving in a car, or flying in a plane, but did you know that browsing the internet also adds to our ecological footprint? A new Chrome plug-in called Earth Mode tracks your energy used online and calculates how many trees need to be planted to offset the energy used.

  1. Mobile Apps To Help You Go Green

Both Apple and Android app stores offer a variety of useful apps to conserve energy and help you go green.

Wunderlist (Free) – Instead of using paper to write down tasks, project details, or shopping lists use this very useful app to get organized.  https://www.wunderlist.com

Locavore (Free): Pinpoint nearby farmers’ markets and farms for local produce.  https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/locavore/id306140158?mt=8

Get me Green ($0.99): Provides tips for recycling and reusing items in your home.  http://appshopper.com/utilities/get-me-green

  1. Eat Less Meat

The meat industry generates nearly one-fifth of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. To make a real dent in the world’s carbon footprint we need to eat less meat.

  1. Buy Local Produce

Did you know that the average piece of produce sits for seven days during its transit from the farm to the produce aisle? This means those “fresh” fruits and vegetables at the supermarket have already lost nearly half of their original nutritional value when you buy them. Buying from a local farm or farmers’ market can increase the nutritional value of your food and lessen your carbon footprint.

  1. Avoid Disposable Plastic

Sadly, only 10% of our current 300 million tons of plastic bags, bottles, packages, and other commodities are recycled. Landfills are bulging from plastic waste, where it leaches dangerous chemicals into nearby soil and water, endangering humans and wildlife.

  1. Start Composting

One-third of all food produced around the world for human consumption is wasted every year. A great way to reduce this waste is by composting. This natural biological process occurs when microorganisms, bacteria, and insects, break down organic materials such as leaves, grass clippings, and certain kitchen scraps into a soil-like product. Tips on how to compost check out HowtoCompost.org.

  1. End Junk Mail

Not only is junk mail annoying, but over 100 million trees a year are cut down to produce the paper. Want to combat junk mail and waste? Call the businesses and organizations and request that they stop sending you their mail. It’s time-consuming, but well worth it.

8 International Film Festivals to Get Excited About in 2016

When it comes to popular film festivals two names usually begin every conversation, Cannes and Sundance.  Thanks to the popularity of these two events, an explosion of new genre-specific film festivals have cropped up and created endless opportunities for filmmakers to share their work. From female empowerment to science-fiction, here are our top eight international film festivals to get excited about in 2016.

Hong Kong International Film Festival Society

    March 21 – April 4, 2016
    Hong Kong
    http://hkiff.org.hk/en/index.php

The Hong Kong International Film Festival has an exciting reputation for promoting and launching new Asian talent. The film fest was founded in 1977, and has grown into one of Asia’s largest film events, screening over 300 films annually. Since 2004, HKIFFS has transformed the film fest from a local experience into an internationally prestigious event.

    Newport Beach Film Festival

    April 21 – 28, 2016
    Newport Beach, California
    www.newportbeachfilmfest.com

Located in our backyard, the Newport Beach Film Festival continues to grow year after year, without losing focus on its local roots. The NBFF operates at multiple Orange County venues, including the Orange County Museum of Art, Lido Live Theater, and Big Newport in Fashion Island, one of the largest screens on the West Coast. Now in its seventeenth year, the NBFF screens well over 300 films in just eight days. Another unique component is its proximity to Los Angeles, where a myriad of film buyers, agents, distributors, and artists attend this prestigious film fest to participate in panels and free seminars.

    Female Eye Film Festival

    June 14 – 19, 2016
    Toronto, Canada
    www.femaleeyefilmfestival.com

This international film festival is Canada’s only competitive international female directors’ event. Showcasing high-end independent films and honoring women from around the globe in the categories of best-of-debut, emerging, and established.  FeFF is also bridging the gap between written, visual, and media arts with a newly established program called FeFF Photo Exhibits.

For three consecutive years (2013-2015) the FeFF was voted, “Top 50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee,” by Movie Maker Magazine. While this film festival celebrates women, a program called Script Development is open to both men and women.

    Edinburgh International Film Festival

    June 15 – 26, 2016
    Edinburgh, Scotland
    www.edfilmfest.org.uk

Established in 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival is the world’s longest continually-running film festival. Though it may not boast the A-list premieres of other European film festivals, the EIFF has developed into a crucial hub for the UK and international film industry. The EIFF emphasizes on new talent, innovation, and development.

    Fantastic Fest

    Austin, Texas
    http://fantasticfest.com

This annual event takes place in September at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas, and fills eight screens over eight days. Hosting both established and new talent, the Fantastic Fest was recently named “25 Coolest Film Festivals” by Movie Maker Magazine.

Oaxaca FilmFest was founded in Mexico in 2010, and since then has grown to be one of the largest international film festivals in Latin America. Nearly six years later, attendees continue to boast about the opportunities to mingle with well-known directors, writers, and producers from around the world. OFF recently allied with Sundance Film to create a variety of workshops covering everything from digital distribution to project marketing. OFF also offers budget-friendly rates and assistance to filmmakers in need.

American Film Festival – US in Progress

This film festival aims at strengthening trans-Atlantic relationships with distribution and post-production contracts. Top prizes include $40,000 in post-production services and film premieres at Sundance and Cannes.

    Citizen Jane Film Festival
